Varanasi also known as Benaras or Kashi, is located on the banks of Ganga River in Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the oldest cities and was associated with a kingdom of the same name in 2500 BC. During the 8th century, Adi Shankara declared the worship of Shiva as an official religious sect within Varanasi. Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi language in Varanasi. Other major figures were born in Varanasi including Kabir and Ravidas. In 1911 the British colonial administration made Benares a princely state that selected Ramnagar to serve as its capital. Since early times Varanasi gained its fame from trade operations which specialized in selling luxurious silk products along with exquisite gold and silver brocades. Varanasi was ceded to the Union of India in 1947, becoming a part of Uttar Pradesh after Indian Independence.
